DRUMMING IN WEST PHILADELPHIA

Come Celebrate the Exhibit Opening of Por El Mejor Mundo / For a Better World w/BuildaBridge's percussion program, The Drummer's Journey

On Sunday, November 17, Salzmann Photography Center will celebrate the opening of the exhibit Por El Mejor Mundo / For a Better World. Por El Mejor Mundo / For a Better World shares the work of Cuban artists, Luis el Estudiante, Luis el Maestro and Grupo Bayate from Mella, Cuba.

BuildaBridge's program, The Drummer's Journey, will join in the celebration. The Drummer's Journey is world-class cadre of drummers who will perform and teach you about African percussion history and performance. Expect to join as an individual and leave as a valued member of a drumming community (and much more).

The session will be facilitated by:

  • Robert Kenyatta, a Grammy-award winner and John Coltrane collaborator

  • Bobby Conga, a percussionist for Grover Washington, Jr.

  • Omomola Iyabunmi, one of the regions finest shekere instructors.

  • Sam Zolten, life-long learner, sought-after and accomplished percussionist

as well as BuildaBridge teaching artists.

During the course of the program, participants learn about Kenyatta's arts-based metaphor and subsequent life lesson, "Being on Your One." This offering supports autonomy, resilience and hope and aligns with BuildaBridge's mission beautifully. Through the instructional process and percussion playing, participants get to experience what it "feels" like to be a part of a BuildaBridge program and are asked to recognize the value and need to share the experience with marginalized children and their communities.

Feel free to bring your own drum or borrow one from BuildaBridge. There's no obligation to play either. Come to play. Come to enjoy. Come as you are. A light food and beverage offering will be provided.

Donations are tax-deductible and will support future BuildaBridge programming! BuildaBridge provides hope-infused art-making to trauma-affected youth and their communities. ANY AMOUNT HELPS! Your gift keeps BuildaBridge going and supports the resilience, self-efficacy and hope-infused futures of Philadelphians.

This event is hosted by Salzmann Photography Center.
